Warning on 'charity' collections

Householders in Carlisle have been told to beware of misleading requests for unwanted clothing.

The warning comes after homes received leaflets asking them to put items in plastic bags for collection.

These often state that people in the developing world will benefit, leading to the sometimes incorrect assumption that the company is a charity.

Police and trading standards officers are advising residents to check with the Charity Commission if in doubt.

Jim Messenger, licensing manager for Carlisle City Council, said: "These leaflets often have a company name and registration number on it, giving the mistaken impression that it is a registered charity.

"Inevitably this raises the question as to who will benefit from the collection.

"Householders must make up their own mind as to the type of organisation they wish to donate their unwanted clothing."
