The device can only be heard by younger people |
Anti-social youths in areas of Carlisle are to be brought under control with devices that emit a high-pitched noise. The Mosquito device lets out a sound which causes discomfort to young ears - but its frequency is above the normal hearing range of people over 25.
The device is being paid for by the Carlisle and Eden Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership.
It sounds for about 10 minutes with the aim of getting youths to disperse. It is irritating, but harmless.
The Mosquitoes will be installed at trouble hot-spots near off licences and shops in Hutton Way, Briar Bank and Central Avenue.
A spokesman for the Cumbria partnership said: "While calls relating to anti-social behaviour are falling in the Carlisle area, agencies working together to combat the problem are aware of certain locations where problems still exist."
