Council signs up for greener city
Carlisle is set to become more environmentally friendly after city council bosses signed up to measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

A list of 10 pledges, which are all aimed at making the city cleaner, greener and safer, has been drawn up.

There will be an increased use of recycling, renewable energy and sustainable transport.

And the council will install energy efficient heating and lighting at the civic centre.

'Benefit communities'

Harvested rainwater will be used to flush the toilets in the visitors' centre at Talkin Tarn. The popular beauty spot will also have solar panels fitted on the warden's facility.

Councillor Ray Bloxham, portfolio holder for environment and infrastructure, said: "The city council continues to make every effort to follow environmentally friendly practices.

"The recent flood-recovery work in the civic centre and the improvement work at Talkin Tarn prove that we appreciate the importance of using sustainable materials and installing energy saving measures.

"We hope to build on these initiatives for the benefit of all our communities."
