Pubs in Cumbria are being encouraged to diversify and provide other services to ensure they remain at the heart of rural communities. Cumbria County Council is joining forces with rural enterprise scheme Pub is the Hub.
The countywide initiative encourages rural pubs and licensees to provide access to local services like post offices, pharmacies and dry cleaners.
The scheme will be launched on Tuesday at a pub in Dacre, near Penrith.
Pub is the Hub has completed more than 200 projects over the last three years. The scheme is being launched at the Horse and Farrier in Dacre, which operates a post office service.
Previously the scheme has worked on a pub-by-pub basis and the partnership with Cumbria County Council is the first time a strategic approach has been taken.
