Continuing help will be offered to domestic violence victims
Victims of domestic violence in rural Cumbria are being offered a helping hand under a new initiative.

Let Go, which is launched at a domestic violence conference next week, is a partnership between police, local councils and other agencies.

The scheme aims to contact every victim reported to the police in north east Cumbria within 24 hours, and provide practical and emotional support.

It has been set up with a 1.6m grant from the Northern Rock Foundation.

The project will also work within the community to challenge assumptions about the acceptability of violence within the family.

Det Supt Bob Pallas, who oversees Cumbria Police's commitment to domestic violence said: "One of the most important ways of tackling the rise in violent crime is through a co-ordinated approach to domestic violence.

"Recent figures show that 37% of victims of domestic violence are repeat victims.

"The Let Go programme enables agencies to reduce the number of repeat victims who suffer abuse in their homes."
