A domestic violence support group and a scheme providing debt help are among projects in Cumbria that are set to benefit from a major charity grant. Five Cumbria organisations will receive grants amounting to 248,770 from the Northern Rock Foundation.
West Cumbria Domestic Violence Support will get 87,750; Millom and District Citizens Advice Bureau 51,000.
So far in 2005 the Newcastle-based foundation has handed out 428,441 to organisations in the county.
West Cumbria Domestic Violence Support will use the cash over three years to provide practical and emotional support to women and children affected by domestic abuse in Allerdale and Copeland.
'Quality of life'
Millom and District Citizens Advice Bureau is to offer home-based financial help to isolated or housebound clients.
Carlisle Rugby Football Club is also to receive 30,000 towards improving changing facilities for women and children.
Leo Finn, chairman of the foundation, said: "Our grants in Cumbria will support organisations that are working to tackle disadvantage and improve people's quality of life in the county."
The foundation is one of the country's largest independent funders of charitable activity, and the biggest grant-maker in the North East and Cumbria.
In 2004 it gave grants worth 17.3m, invested a further 8.2m in special initiatives to tackle domestic abuse and prevent re-offending.
