Brakes are put on car park racers
A council is spending 10,000 to put the brakes on so-called boy racers who have turned a city car park into a rally course.

Carlisle City Council has installed automatic barriers at the entrance and exit of Devonshire Walk car park.

The move follows complaints from people living nearby about young drivers racing through the site and blasting out music from their car stereos.

The barriers will remain down each evening until the next morning.

City Councillor Ray Bloxham said: "Residents raised concerns about anti-social behaviour occurring in the late evening and overnight and the police have also raised this as an issue.

"The new barriers are designed to block access during these times to individuals who want to cause a nuisance.

"I hope that local residents will see a marked improvement and we will monitor the situation using CCTV cameras."
