Millions of pounds is being spent redeveloping Workington and a new scheme is being launched to help hundreds of people back into work.

The Routes to Work initiative aims to ensure that local people have skills to fill expected new posts in the town.

It is hoped that more than 750 jobs will be created in and around Workington when the development is completed in 2006.

The Routes to Work project consists of a number of targeted schemes including retail workshops, where jobseekers will learn shop skills and customer care.

It is hoped it will lead to 250 residents becoming employed in shops.

Advice and support

The project will target those on incapacity or other disability benefits in the area, and it is hoped at least 120 new jobs will go to disabled people.

A series of roadshows will take place over the next few months, where opportunities will be advertised and advice and support about benefits and childcare will be available.

Routes to Work is a partnership project involving Allerdale Borough Council, Derwent and Solway Housing Association and Rathbone Training.
