Suspected drink drivers will be tested at random checkpoints |
Police in Cumbria are launching a summer drink drive campaign. They say drink driving is often seen as a Christmas issue but figures show that people are more likely to drive after a drink in spring or summer.
Their campaign starts on Friday and will run until 31 August and the public is being asked to report offenders.
Cumbria Police say they aim to be proactive and will set up random checkpoints, where suspected drink drivers will be breathalysed.
People who are stopped by the police when they have committed traffic offences will also be breath tested.
Lose licence
Insp Iain Clark, from the force's mobile support group, said: "In the summer there is often more temptation to drink and drive, especially when the weather is fine, people have barbecues or go out for a pub lunch.
"We would like to remind people of the consequences of so doing.
"Drink will impair your judgement and makes it more likely that you would have an accident where you could inflict injury or kill someone.
"If you are caught driving while under the influence of drink, not only will you have to pay a heavy fine, but also you could lose your licence or in more serious cases be sent to jail."
