The body of the baby, named Lara by police, was found in a garage in Barepot, near Workington, in September 2002.

A couple arrested in connection with the death were released without charge earlier this month.

Police arrested Philip Chadwick, 42, and his wife Anne, 41, at their home in Worcestershire on 28 January.

A Cumbria Police spokesman said: "There has been no cause of death established for baby Lara.

"She did have a wound to her skull, but from a previous injury that had healed.

"She did not have a fatal blow to the skull.

"Speculation at this stage is not helpful as we are awaiting forensic results to confirm a number of lines of inquiry.

"And it is wrong to speculate publicly about relationships between Lara and anyone without having those results to hand.

"Our objective has always been to trace the parents of Lara and try to find the circumstances in which Lara died to take to the coroner at inquest.

"At this stage there is no conclusive evidence to link Lara to any parent.

'Fully committed'

"We await DNA results from a number of people, which may or may not give us a link with Lara.

"The first person to be informed will be Her Majesty's coroner.

"We have gone to great lengths to encourage people to have an open mind on this case and until we can prove conclusively who the parents of Lara were that will be our stance.

"We still have a number of lines of inquiry open.

"The inquiry team is fully committed to this investigation, which has been a highly sensitive and emotional one."
