Protesters are trying to save hundreds of jobs

Parent company Ford's decision to end production at the factory will lead to 1,100 jobs being lost.

Hundreds took part in a march in Coventry a fortnight ago to protest at the plans, which would see production moving to Castle Bromwich, Birmingham.

A ballot ended at noon on Monday. Amicus, T&G and GMB members voted by 55% to 45% against strike action.

Ford says the move will save �80m a year, a figure disputed by the unions, who claim no more than �15m can be made in salary savings.

Land Rover merger

Jaguar announced the decision to end major production at Browns Lane in September.

Under the plans to stop making XK and XJ Jaguars in Coventry, there will be 400 voluntary redundancies and 425 jobs will be moved to the Castle Bromwich factory.

Jaguar will also lose 750 mostly white-collar staff, as office work is merged with Land Rover.

The company had urged workers not to strike over the plans, saying it would not be in the interests of the firm, employees or customers.
