More funds to stop domestic abuse

Police in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly have been given extra funding to help tackle domestic violence over the festive period.

The police attend up to 6,000 incidents of domestic abuse in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly every year and it is estimated another 6,000 go unreported.

A total of �10,000 has been earmarked for the scheme to help stop such abuse.

The money will be spent on various initiatives, including extra police support and identifying those at risk.

The increased enforcement activity will run alongside a national television advertising campaign encouraging victims of domestic violence to seek support instead of suffering in silence.

Chief Constable Brian Moore, Association of Chief Police Officer's Lead for Domestic Abuse said: "From previous campaigns, we know that Christmas and New Year is a time of significant increases in domestic abuse.

"We urge victims to come forward and we will support and protect them.

"We also want to send a message to perpetrators of domestic abuse that this behaviour will not be tolerated - we want everyone to be safe in their homes this Christmas and New Year."
