Rugby club backs 5m stadium plan
Redruth plans
Proposals for the new stadium will now be put to planners
Redruth Rugby Club members have given the go-ahead for a new 5m stadium on the outskirts of the town.

The Reds will leave the Recreation Ground, the club's home for more than 100 years, and move to Tolgus Farm in a land swap deal.

Developer Percy Williams and Sons, which co-owns the Tolgus Farm site, will build houses on the Recreation Ground site.

However, the proposal has divided people in Redruth.

Club secretary Roger Watson said after a meeting on Monday that the club had outgrown its historic home which has no designated training area.

"We've got to look forward," he said.

"The Rec's been great, but it's not where the next three or four generations of rugby players need to be based."

But local councillor and club member Tommy Bray, one of just nine people who voted against the relocation, said it could affect Redruth's economy and the town will lose part of its history.

"I have had a lot of calls from ex-players and officials worried about the loss of something that is special to Redruth."

Plans will be submitted to Kerrier District Council.
