China clay firm cuts jobs by 6%
Imerys quarry
Cuts are being blamed on "difficult global trading conditions"
Almost 120 jobs are being cut at a china clay company in Cornwall.

Imerys said that the job losses were part of a restructuring plan to increase competitiveness.

It is making 117 staff redundant at the company's operations in Cornwall, which is about 6% of the total workforce employed in the county.

Imerys said it regretted the losses and that a 90-day consultation period would begin next week with trade unions to discuss the proposed changes.

The company said over half of the posts being cut were due to improved productivity and technical innovation.

It blamed the remaining cuts on "difficult global trading conditions" and "unusually steep increases in prices of energy, international freight and chemicals".

The company said it wanted to concentrate on increasing its competitiveness in Cornwall - which included a predicted investment of about 27m by the end of the year.

It added that hoped as many of the posts as possible would go through voluntary redundancy.

The news comes on the same day that magazine wrapping company Ailec Mailing Services, based at the Victoria Business Park in Roche, announced it was cutting 130 posts.
