Conference debating housing costs
Building site
Average prices in Devon and Cornwall are more than 200,000
Housing is the subject of a conference being held in Cornwall on Monday.

More than 175 representatives from the community, voluntary organisations, public agencies and developers will be attending the event in Newquay.

Average house prices in Cornwall and Devon are now more than 200,000, it is reported.

It is being staged by the Cornwall Strategic Partnership, the Cornwall Housing Partnership, Inclusion Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly Economic Forum.

Delegates will be discussing housing issues in general, but with a focus on aspects of affordability.

David Worledge, who has built about 70 low-cost homes in Cornwall and has more planned, says many more should be built to meet the county's needs.

He said: "You've got to accept the fact that local authorities have policies which have got to be kept to.

"Obviously there are ground rules, but the problem is making sure those policies are mortgageable, workable and work for everybody.

"All the industry, and that includes councils, have got to get round the table and they've got to make it happen."

Last month Prince Charles released guidelines on how to provide more low-cost housing, as part of his Affordable Rural Housing Initiative which aims to help people set up home in their local community.

Cornwall was chosen as a housing hot spot to launch the initiative last November. It is hoped it will help local people remain in their communities and keep their schools, shops, pubs and other services alive.
