Mail change sparks strike threat
Sorting office
Royal Mail says it hopes to redeploy members of staff
Postal workers in Cornwall could be balloted on strike action, following Royal Mail proposals to move overnight post sorting from Cornwall to Plymouth.

Sixteen jobs at the Truro sorting office could be affected, although Royal Mail says it will not be seeking compulsory redundancies.

The company said focussing resources to where staff are needed will improve efficiency and benefit customers.

But the Communication Workers Union has rejected the proposals.

Staff redeployment

Clive Welsford, the union representative for the South West and South Wales, said staff are naturally concerned about what could happen.

"It's very difficult to say what the effect would be, so one can only guess," he said.

"If the office it is being sorted at is the most effective and efficient in the country, to move it to another one - and I am certainly not disparaging Plymouth's performance - means it must be going to an office where it's going to worsen the quality of service."

Royal Mail said it hopes to redeploy members of staff to other sides of its operations.
