Water bill fight goes to minister

South West water bills are amongst the highest in the country
South West Liberal Democrat MPs will meet consumer representatives Watervoice next week, prior to a vital meeting with the water minister.

The MPs are unhappy at the high water bills in the region.

They will discuss with Watervoice the importance of persuading government ministers to step in to halt a further rise in South West Water bills.

They will then meet Elliot Morley, the minister responsible for regulating the water industry.

The meeting was arranged as a result of a special parliamentary debate called by Truro and St Austell MP Matthew Taylor on the issue, just before the general election.

The people in the South West just can't afford yet more water bill increases.

Mr Taylor said: "Our action in the last Parliament has already made the Minister sit up, now he must really take notice."

North Cornwall MP, Dan Rogerson, the newly-elected Chair of the MPs' group said: "Dr Noel Olsen and Watervoice have proved great advocates for a fairer deal for our region - Liberal Democrats will work with them to get a fair deal on water bills.

"Working together, we hope to make the Government listen."

Nick Harvey, MP for North Devon has triggered another Parliamentary debate on the issue for next Tuesday.

He said: "Enough is enough. The message coming through loud and clear from voters in the recent election campaign, was that they will not tolerate high water bills any more.

"They want to pay the same as the rest of the country. There are various ways this could be done - Government must choose one or other and then get on with it."

During the general election Liberal Democrats across the South West collected signatures petitioning in protest at the charges.

South West Water says recent increases were needed to meet the company's obligations for improved sewerage and water pipes.
