'Unfit' pub boss's licence taken
The Newquay Arms
The pub's licensee is to face disciplinary action
One of the biggest pubs in Newquay has had its entertainments licence revoked after a series of complaints.

The local licensing authority said fire safety regulations at the Newquay Arms had been ignored and the licensee was not "fit and proper" to run it.

Licensee Ken Parsonage declined an opportunity to respond to the license being revoked.

The company which owns the pub, the Spirit Group in Burton-on-Trent, said a new manager would be appointed.

"A barman sprayed 8ft (2.4m) of the bar area with lighter fuel and lit the bar
Andrew Waters, Restormel Borough Council
Losing its entertainments licence means the Newquay Arms will no longer be able to offer live music and dancing, or extended opening hours.

Restormel Borough Council's licensing committee took the highly unusual step after hearing evidence from a number of agencies who had been to the pub, and from members of the public.

Andrew Waters from the council said: "Complaints covered overcrowding, fire doors being locked, inadequate supervision of door control staff and a certain number of door staff were not registered with the authority."

One other incident stood out, Mr Waters said.

He said: "A barman was seen to be juggling spirit bottles with rags in them which were lit with lighter fuel. He then sprayed 8ft [2.4m] of the bar area with the lighter fuel and lit the bar."

The police, along with the fire brigade and environmental health officers, targeted the Newquay Arms and a number of other large pubs in the town during the summer as part of a campaign to ensure safety and reduce anti-social behaviour.

Insp Ivan Trethewey of Devon & Cornwall Police said: "As a result of that, several clubs are being taken to court for selling to underage drinkers and there are still other operations under way.

"The message has to be clear with all the bad publicity Newquay has suffered in the past, we and our partner agencies will not tolerate this any further."

The Spirit Group said that the pub's licensee was being replaced and would face internal disciplinary action.

The company then plans to appeal against the entertainments licence decision with a new manager in place.
