Mobile mast demonstration threat
Mobile phone mast
Some residents believe fears over health have not been answered
People living in north Cornwall are threatening to stage a demonstration to prevent a new mobile phone mast being sited near their homes.

There is already a mast at the Bodmin Business Centre, but mobile operator Vodafone wants to replace it with a different mast with more antennae.

But residents in Marks Drive want North Cornwall District Council to listen to their objections and refuse permission.

Maureen McLaughlin says she is prepared to chain herself to the existing mast.

'Nimbyism'

The local grandmother says she believes there is still a question mark over possible health risks associated with mobile masts.

Mrs McLaughlin said: "On my own I don't suppose I can do very much, but by rallying other people around, we can try to do something."

Another Marks Drive resident, Dave Bailey, says councils are sometime guilty of 'nimbyism'.

Mr Bailey said: "When councils give permission for these things to be put up, I wonder how many council people live within 30m of one themselves.

"It's like a lot of things in this country now - 'it's not in my back yard, so it's ok' - but people like us have got to live with it."

High Court judge, Sir Richard Tucker, ruled in June in favour of mast proposals by T-Mobile, Orange and Hutchinson 3G, saying they met current safety guidelines.

The judge said the plans did not give rise to "actual danger", even though there was a "perception of risk" amongst the public.
