The charity is seeking an EU ban on importing wild parrots

The World Parrot Trust (WPT), based in Hayle, Cornwall, has produced what they believe to be the world's first DVD aimed at an avian audience.

PollyVision features wild parrots preening, feeding and flying through the rainforest.

The 80-minute DVD was produced by parrot biologist and WPT director Jamie Gilardi.

He said: "We wanted to make a film for captive birds to fill some of the boring moments in their lives.

"Parrots are highly intelligent, sensitive and social creatures.

"They need a great deal of enrichment and stimulation, or they get bored and depressed, and as humans do, they develop psychological and behavioural problems."

The DVD, edited to appeal to parrots' interests and attention span, has been released as part of celebrations for World Parrot Day on 31 May.

Alison Hales, one of the directors of Hayle-based Paradise Park Wildlife Sanctuary, which started the WPT in 1989, admitted that some of the UK's one million caged parrots may find the images of freedom disturbing.

She said: "We have yet to see whether all parrots will respond to it, or whether some will be frightened."

On World Parrot Day Mr Gilardi and other campaigners will deliver to 10 Downing Street a petition calling on the EU to ban the import of wild-caught birds.
