Town's regeneration in the frame
Newquay
Newquay is trying to market itself as an all-year destination
A big step forward is expected in the campaign to transform Cornwall's biggest holiday resort.

A plan outlining a 20-year vision for Newquay, the Newquay Action Framework, is due to be officially adopted by Restormel councillors on Monday.

Its aim is to build on the town's reputation as Britain's surf capital.

But business leaders have complained progress is too slow, and there are also claims that tourists have priority over residents' needs.

Improved access

The plan sets out several key development sites and says the resort has vast potential as a year-round holiday destination.

Those behind the plan want to see Newquay's seafront become more of a focus for the development of the town.

The plan says there must be better access to the town's beaches, better quality buildings and an improved shopping centre.

The blueprint also highlights the need for more public spaces, pedestrian areas and better transport links.

However, the town's chamber of commerce has said that regeneration is taking too long.

It has taken two years to draw up a comprehensive regeneration scheme and actual redevelopment work has been on hold, says the chamber.

The council says work has been going ahead, including a 500,000 new bus station.

Members of Restormel's cabinet are expected to adopt the regeneration plan on Monday night.

They are also likely to approve production of a prospectus designed to attract developers able to turn Newquay's vision into reality.
