Residents opened up their homes to stranded tourists |
A contingency plan has been drawn up in case tourists become fog-bound on the Isles of Scilly. The plan has been prepared by the Council of the Isles of Scilly, after more than 500 holidaymakers were stranded overnight in June.
The new strategy includes a list held by the council of all accommodation on the islands.
In the event of thick fog, a stall will be opened at the airport and tourists will be directed to accommodation.
Emergency centres
In June the holidaymakers had to remain on St Mary's when poor visibility meant the plane and helicopter services could not run.
Normally when fog comes down on the Isles of Scilly visitors who should fly home, can return to the mainland on the Scillonian ferry.
But this time the boat was too busy to accommodate any extra passengers, and more than 500 people were stranded overnight.
The council set up emergency rest centres, and many residents opened up their homes to the visitors.
But the unusual occurrence prompted the council to formulate the new contingency plan.
