Several accidents have occurred at level crossings on the branch line

It is the second time within a year that an accident has happened at the Halloon level crossing at St Columb Road.

The accident happened shortly before 1400 on Tuesday.

Network Rail, which is making improvements to the line following accidents at other crossings, is investigating.

Cornwall Air Ambulance flew the 19-year-old car driver, who suffered shoulder injuries, to the Royal Cornwall Hospital at Treliske,

Witness Nicolas Roseby, who works nearby, said there should be barriers, which have been installed at the nearby Quintrell Downs crossing.

The speed limit on the road has been cut from 60mph to 30mph, but he said that was not enough.

He said: "I would like to better signs and better traffic calming measures.

"The lights should make it more obvious that there is a crossing."

Two people were taken to hospital after a train hit a car on the same level crossing in April last year.

The car was driven up the bank by the force of the crash and the driver had to be cut free from the wreckage. He also suffered shoulder injuries.
