Crossings safety to be reviewed
Train and car in collision in April
Several accidents have occurred at level crossings on the branch line
Safety precautions on a railway branch line in Cornwall are to be reviewed after a number of accidents.

Network Rail says it is considering improving safety at a level crossing at Quintrell Downs on the Par to Newquay line at a cost of 1m.

The latest accident on the branch line occurred in April when a car was in collision with a train at St Columb Road.

The level crossing at that location does not have a safety barrier, and neither does the one at Quintrell Downs.

Flashing lights

The crossings are currently unmanned and are controlled by flashing lights.

Network Rail has told North Cornwall MP Paul Tyler that it intends to provide barriers at Quintrell Downs in this financial year, because it is one of the busiest road crossings.

As a result of several site visits, the company says it is also considering better warning signs, clearing roadside vegetation and providing coloured strips of tarmac to highlight the existence of crossings.

Track engineering is also to be carried out at the Tregoss Moor crossing just off the A30, and a speed limit is being planned for Halloon.
