Newquay surf lifeguards in action in Danger on the Beach |
Some of the most dramatic rescue missions carried out along the South West coast are being shown in a new programme. Danger on the Beach profiles the work of Newquay and Brixham coastguards which cope with more than 13,000 calls a year.
It looks at the lives of the rescuers and how the service meets the demands of the holiday season.
The series, which starts on BBC One on Wednesday, was filmed last summer.
Geoff Brown, of the Newquay coastguard rescue team, said: "After about the first week or so we just forgot about the cameras and got on with the job so it didn't make any difference to us.
"What you will see on television is exactly how it happened.
"There are no reconstructions and there are all sorts of messages that people can pick up on beach safety."
'Real treat'
Series producer, Lucinda Axelsson, said: "The lifeguards bring a bit of glamour. The whole Baywatch, beach culture aspect of it is great fun and they had it all happening.
"It was a real gift that we had such fantastic temperatures.
"We had everything from lost children to the dreaded weaver fish and saving lives.
"It was a real treat for us to be there.
"We were on call 24 hours a day, which was quite a culture shock.
"Normally you know what you are going to be filming, but with this we never knew."
