The tractor was crushed in the incident

The accident happened on Saturday afternoon on the Newquay to Par branch line.

The train was derailed on a cattle crossing near Quintrell Downs and took several hours to clear.

Inspector Kevin Marshall from British Transport Police says the tractor driver was "very lucky" to escape with shock and head injuries.

The accident happened at 1608 BST on the Newquay to Par branch line at Chapel, close to the Trencreek Crossing, near Newquay.

There were 59 passengers on the train, the 1106 BST train from Paddington to Newquay.

None of them was injured in the accident.

The train driver suffered shock, and a member of the buffet car staff was treated for a minor neck injury, a First Great Western spokesman said.

Despite being stuck for two hours on the Newquay to Par branch line, one passenger, Sarah Churchill from Salisbury in Wiltshire, said she and her son were well looked after by train staff

"My son just thought it was an adventure," she said.

"They instantly said we could have free refreshments, they called all the emergency services and kept us informed.

"They were brilliant.

"And we are here safely which is the most important thing, we're now going to go and have our holiday."

A telephone is provided at the Chapel Farm crossing, where the accident happened, so vehicles can seek permission from a signaller to cross.

The accident is the fifth collision on that stretch of track in recent months.
