Health care plans on agenda
Treliske Hospital
The Royal Cornwall Hospital at Treliske is full to capacity
More than 150 delegates attended a conference in Cornwall to map out the future of health care in the county.

Decisions taken on Friday will affect where patients have their operations in future, and how hospitals manage limited funds.

The Royal Cornwall Hospital at Treliske in Truro is full to capacity and it is a similar story at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth, which serves the north and east of the county.

The conference was looking at ways to take the pressure off them and make better use of Cornwall's community hospitals.

Treatment centres

All health trusts have been looking at ways to improve the way 470m a year is spent on healthcare across the county.

Making better use of smaller hospitals, like one in Falmouth which has hi-tech links with consultants elsewhere, could be one way of helping to cut waiting lists.

New diagnostic and treatment centres already proposed in some areas might also allow more day case surgery closer to where people live.

The organisers of the meeting in Newquay say the whole community will have the chance to have a say and local MPs and councillors have been invited to take part in the discussions.
