Kit Hill quarry is a popular swimming spot for locals

Stephen Royston, 24, jumped 100 feet from rocks into the water-filled quarry at Kit Hill, near Callington on Saturday evening.

When Mr Royston did not reappear from the jump his twin brother dived repeatedly into the water to try and find him.

His body was later recovered by police divers.

Susan Royston, from St Ann's Chapel near Gunnislake in Devon, said she hoped the tragic accident would stop other youngsters tombstoning - jumping from high rocks into water.

"Stephen was a caring and kind young man with a lot of love in him and I am sure he would not want us to suffer so much," she said.

'Small comfort'

"There is no way he thought his daring leap into the deep quarry waters would end this way.

"It was a sunny day, he was surrounded by his friends and they were all happy.

"I have to hold on to that thought, small comfort that it is.

"If only his tragic death could at least help to prevent another mother and father going through this it may have some meaning."

A Devon and Cornwall Police spokesman described the death as a "tragic accident".
