Residents living around the Great Ouse, have been warned to prepare for floods by police after water levels on the river peaked. Emergency crews have been on standby in the St Neots area and low-lying fens since Monday afternoon with warnings the river levels would peak in Bedford.
Four bridges in the town were shut when the river level peaked at lunchtime.
The Environment Agency has predicted floods could hit Cambridgeshire in the early hours of Wednesday.
'Resources in place'
Cambs police said homeowners are advised to be prepared and are urged to move their possessions.
Homes in the St Neots, Paxton and Offords area are expected to be hit by flooding at 0300 BST on Wednesday, the Environment Agency has said.
Planning teams involving the emergency services, councils and the agency have met to discuss the possible problems.
Supt Simon Megicks, of Cambridgeshire Constabulary, said: "Councils, health colleagues, fire and ambulance staff all want to make sure we are ready for any flooding.
"We've made sure we have the resources in place to do all that we can."
Drivers were advised to avoid places where flood warning signs are situated along the river across the two counties.
