Cyclists make room for buses

Cyclists are lobbying against another bus lane
Bicycle riders in Cambridge say a proposal to replace cycle lanes with bus lanes is unsafe.

Under current plans, the width of Milton Road would be reduced to accommodate a new bus lane, which would mean cyclists would either have to share the road with traffic or share a new footpath with pedestrians.

Clare Macrae, with Cambridge Cycling Campaign, said the plans would make the route unbearable for people on bikes.

"The stretch of Milton Road that already has a bus lane is so legendary for causing problems for cyclists in Cambridge that they have christened it 'the Milton Road effect'.

"Cars try and squeeze past you when there really isn't room to do so."

She said cyclists coming into Cambridge and motorists leaving the area will be affected, because the section of road would be reduced to three metres.

Councillor Bob Menzies, with Cambridgeshire County Council, told BBC Look East the change will not make the road unsafe.

He said: "Essentially, cyclists will have the option of staying on the road, and perhaps the faster cyclists will do that, which will be less of an issue.

"The slower cyclists can use the footway."

Ms Macrae said it was feared other routes in Cambridge will be subjected to similar measures, squeezing out people on bikes.
