The National Union of Journalists said it would fight the cuts |
Up to 85 ITV staff in the south west are to lose their jobs as part of a series of cost-cutting measures. The news was revealed to employees on Tuesday and now the company could be facing the threat of strike action, according to the one union, the NUJ. More than 50% of the jobs at ITV West in Bristol and Plymouth-based ITV West Country are to be axed in a move that would save the company 40m. The new region, ITV South West, will stretch from Penzance to Tewkesbury. 'Restructuring plans' ITV West Country programmes will move to Bristol and the headquarters at Langage in Plymouth, where 90 work, will close. As part of a restructuring plan, ITV plans to cut its newsrooms around the UK from 17 to nine. A limited news bulletin for each area will be maintained within the new region, served by satellite bases in Exeter, Barnstaple, Taunton and either Truro or Falmouth. A spokesman for the National Union of Journalists (NUJ) said: "Unless ITV meaningfully engages with unions over its plans for the future of regional news, industrial action seems inevitable. "Any attempts to force through these massive cuts will be met with strong resistance."
