Revised stadium is given approval

Memorial Stadium flats
The stadium will hold 18,000 people and incorporate student flats

Revised plans for the expansion of Bristol's Memorial Stadium have been approved by the local council.

The football and rugby clubs which share the ground want to create an 18,000-seat capacity venue with a hotel and student accommodation attached.

A developer now needs to be found and work could start by summer.

During the public consultation, Bristol City Council received 1,083 letters in favour of the expansion and 966 against.

The plans include a parking zone for residents and provision of transport including a park and ride service.

A noise report submitted with the plans suggested that by fully enclosing the stadium, noise levels would be reduced.

A series of conditions to restrict activities and opening hours were also proposed to protect those living nearby to the stadium.

The stadium on Filton Avenue, Horfield, is home to Bristol Rovers Football Club and Bristol Rugby Club.
