Ken Loach's film helped found Shelter |
Charities working with homeless families in the West of England say affordable housing must be a priority. They estimate that one in seven children are growing up in poor housing in the area.
The issue was highlighted at a special screening of Cathy Come Home in Bath, attended by director Ken Loach.
He said: "If we are so rich... and we have a million children suffering... if that doesn't tell us we have a rotten system, what does?"
Soup was served at the film by some of those currently homeless in the city.
Made for the BBC in 1968, Cathy Come Home tells the story of a young homeless couple caught in a poverty trap.
It led to the formation of the homeless charity Shelter.
The government says the number of homeless people is at its lowest since the 1980s.
