Rolls-Royce plc has announced that it has won a 65m contract from the UK's Ministry of Defence (MoD). The contract extends and expands an existing agreement to support the Spey engines that power the Nimrod MRA2 and R1 reconnaissance aircraft.
The programme is managed from Bristol with the majority of the work being carried out at the Rolls-Royce plant at East Kilbride and at RAF Kinloss.
The initial contract to support the Speys was signed in April 2000.
Following the decision to keep the Nimrod MRA2 in service for longer, the contract has been extended until 2011 and its scope broadened to include engine accessories, ground support equipment and all spares.
The new contract aims to guarantee engine availability and enable the Royal Air Force to fly a set programme.
Group Captain George Baber, Nimrod IPT Leader said: "The increased levels of engine availability have made a huge difference to us over the last four years. "
