Continental Airlines will launch the non-stop service from Bristol International Airport to New York-Newark on 20 May next year.

The new flights are expected to bring a number of jobs to the airport as well as boosting tourism in the area.

The service will be operated by a 172-seat Boeing 757 plane with flight times of around eight hours.

Andrew Skipp, Bristol airport's managing director, said: "Continental Airlines' decision to operate a non stop service to New York from Bristol International Airport is fantastic news for both the airport and the South West region.

"This transatlantic service will give a huge boost to the regional economy and will elevate Bristol and the South West of England onto the world stage."

Bristol is the largest city in the South West, and home to the national headquarters of over 160 companies. It is a centre for high-tech businesses and aerospace industries.

The airport is 15 miles from the heritage city of Bath, a popular destination for American tourists, and a few hours' drive from the coastal resorts of Devon and Cornwall.
