New funds for police specials
Police forces in the West are to receive more than 200,000 to recruit and train new special constables, the Home Office has announced.

The money is part of a 2.5m package across England and Wales to recruit 3,000 new officers into all 43 forces.

Special constables are volunteer officers who work with the regular police.

At least 75 new specials in each police force will be recruited and trained with the funding.

Money for the West
Avon and Somerset Police: 70,000
Gloucestershire Police: 67,194
Wiltshire Police: 69,950
Home Office minister Hazel Blears said: "Volunteer specials are a crucial part of modern day policing.

"The skills, experience and local knowledge they bring to policing makes a huge contribution to the communities they serve.

"They are a key part of the wider police family, providing a visible presence on the streets, and helping to cut crime and the fear of crime."
