Special help for city police
Police
The initiative will target street and vehicle crime

Up to 100 special constables are taking to the streets of Leeds as a part of a crime-busting initiative.

They will be tackling street and vehicle crime in the city centre on Saturday.

Shoplifters, beggars, and persistent offenders will be targeted.

The operation is part of West Yorkshire Police's Target Initiative, and the special constables will be patrolling alongside other officers.

Chief Superintendent Sue Day said: "I am delighted that Target will be coming to Leeds this weekend.

"Whilst crime in Leeds is no greater than any other major city, the volume and presence of the specials will provide reassurance to shoppers and visitors.

"They will also offer valuable assistance to local officers."
