Rain's 'small impact' on shortage
Running tap
On average the region's reservoirs are 58% full
A regional water supplier says the recent rain has done little to ease concern over dwindling supplies.

A spokesman for Bristol Water said the company was conserving water stocks and repairing any leaks as quickly as possible.

"On average, the reservoir levels have remained at 48% full.

"However, a refill has not yet started and another 251m litres left the reservoirs in the week ending 4 November," he said.

On average, reservoirs were 28% lower than at the same time last year, he added.

The summer and early autumn were exceptionally dry with Mendip rainfall totalling 418 millimetres this year, compared to the standard average expected to date of 581 millimetres.

Bristol Water says there is no immediate cause for alarm, but stresses the recent rain does not mean everything has returned to normal.

On Tuesday, water companies in the South East discussed plans to install compulsory water meters in thousands of homes.

Managers said the hot summer weather had caused an unprecedented winter drought, with water supplies dwindling to their lowest levels for decades.
