The Bristol Clipper has moved into the overall lead in the round-the-world Clipper race after narrowly escaping serious damage to the boat. A second place finish in the latest leg of the challenge from Cape Town to Salvador, Brazil, edged the yacht into first place on points.
But the race finish proved a tricky one for the Bristol crew when the boat was flipped onto her side at about 0300GMT (0000 local time), about 20 miles from the finish line.
As she lay on her side, the crew had to scramble on deck in the dark and free the clipper's sails to right the yacht in the southern Atlantic.
All the equipment and sails were recovered without damage and no-one was injured.
The New York yacht won the latest leg and Bristol's closest rivals, Jersey, were in last place.
The race, held every two years, is the world's longest circumnavigation challenge, covering more than 35,000 miles in 11 months.
