The voluntary Bristol Campus scheme would see the city's state schools linking up in clusters to share resources.

The scheme is being spearheaded by The Learning and Skills Council (LSC), responsible for post-16 state education in the city.

Students and teachers could move between schools as necessary, and negotiations about private schools signing up are thought to be ongoing.

A spokesperson for the LSC said: "The Bristol Campus is an exciting new approach for the city, aimed at raising standards, attracting more learners and offering a better choice of opportunities for young people."

The new school in the north of the city, to be called the North Bristol Institute, would form part of the campus.

The consultation period on this new Redland school is due to end on Friday.
