The council says it is a hugely ambitious bid |
Park land near Bristol looks set for an ambitious 8.5m restoration and improvement programme if plans are approved. The owner of Ashton Court estate, Bristol City Council, is seeking permission for a range of works that would improve the park, restore the mansion's gardens and protect and repair several listed buildings and landmarks.
If the planning application is supported by North Somerset Council, Bristol will be able to submit a final application to the Heritage Lottery Fund.
The council wants to repair historic buildings, walls, driveways and ponds across the estate, as well as restoring the mansion gardens to reflect the vision set out by 18th century gardener, Humphry Repton.
'Strong case'
Peter Wilkinson of Bristol City Council, said: "This is a hugely ambitious bid, which promises to deliver a significant investment for local people and business, both in Bristol and North Somerset.
"Local people have been overwhelmingly supportive of the plans.
"With support from the public and a range of national experts for the council's plans, we have a very strong case to put forward to secure Heritage Lottery funding."
The estate becomes a focus of attention each year when Bristol's balloon festival is held there.
