Holiday homes plan for historic cottage
The keeper's cottage
Income from the cottage will help maintain the estate
A cottage in the grounds of a historic mansion could be turned into holiday homes to help pay for the upkeep of the estate.

Ashton Court, near Bristol, is a popular tourist attraction and is a venue for many events, including the city's annual International Balloon Fiesta.

Its owner, Bristol City Council, is applying for planning permission to restore and convert the former keeper's cottage into self-catering accommodation.

This is an opportunity where it could be put back into use.

Angie Burton, council spokesman

The income from the rents would be used to maintain the holiday homes and any surplus would be reinvested in the estate.

Council spokesman, Angie Burton, said: "There were some tenants who lived in the cottage, but they left about three or four years ago.

"This is an opportunity where it could be put back into use."

Ashton Court falls under the planning control of neighbouring North Somerset District Council.

If the development is approved, the homes should be ready for letting by spring 2003.

The 14th Century estate, once the property of a wealthy merchant, has undergone extensive refurbishment since Bristol City Council took over its management in 1959.
