Doncaster is home to the famous St Leger race in September
Detailed plans for a 55m redevelopment of Doncaster Racecourse have been submitted to council planning officers.

The application includes designs for a stables complex, accommodation block, and state-of-the-art grandstand, exhibition and conference centre.

If approved, work on the new facilities should be completed in 2007.

Mayor of Doncaster, Martin Winter, said Arena Leisure's scheme would revitalise the town and make the Town Moor racecourse one of the best in the UK.

"With the development including an exhibition and conference facility of world class standard, tourism in Doncaster will get a shot in the arm that will bring benefits to all the people of Doncaster," he said.

"These facilities will significantly extend the use of the venue beyond racing days and provide a sustainable economic boost to the town."
