Domestic abuse survivors will be able to get a security upgrade

A scheme to secure the homes of domestic abuse survivors so they do not have to go to refuges has been set up.

Anyone abused or living in fear of abuse in Windsor and Maidenhead can apply for "Sanctuary".

It provides security upgrades including window and door locks and safe rooms, depending on need and the risk posed.

The authority joined forces with Maidenhead and District Housing Association and Thames Valley Police to develop the initiative.

Residents applying for the scheme must live in the borough and the abuser must no longer be resident at the property, the council said.

If the property is jointly owned with the perpetrator, legal advice should be sought - no work can be carried out because the person has a legal right to occupy it, it added.

The scheme was launched to coincide with International Women's Day on Sunday.
