Conference on children at risk

Professionals from a number of child protection agencies are to discuss ways of ensuring children in Reading are safe from violence in the home.

Thames Valley Police Domestic Abuse team and Thames Valley probation service will talk about their work with abusers and families at a conference.

Berkshire Women's Aid will also attend the event, organised by Reading Local Safeguarding Children Board.

The participants will look at how domestic violence affects children.

Pete Ruhemann, lead councillor for the borough council's children's services, said: "Under new arrangements that came in a couple of years ago, children's services are notified by the police whenever they attend a domestic violence incident where children are involved.

"That enables us to see whether the children are at risk and to work with the police and others to make them safe.

"Learning together at this conference will help weld together a stronger team to protect Reading children from harm. "
