Late night trains back on track
A First Great Western train
The late night service will return to Newbury in May
Late night train services have been planned to return to a Berkshire route after campaigning by commuters.

A new timetable, introduced by First Great Western in December, had cut late night trains from London to Newbury.

The changes followed three previous train franchises being integrated into one for the Thames Valley region.

Newbury MP Richard Benyon had campaigned for the "vital" late night service. He said he was delighted it would be re-introduced in May.

Mr Benyon said: "This success comes at the end of a year-long campaign to save this service.

"I am so pleased for all the people who have written to me on this matter or who have raised it directly with First Great Western (FGW).

"It is clear that this service was of great value to many people for both their working and social life," he said.

Last month, FGW's new timetable was heavily criticised by passengers and local MPs who described it as "an unmitigated disaster" at a summit.

However, FGW agreed to double the size of a morning commuter train from Newbury, from April.

The 0015 BST service to Newbury is due to be reinstated in May.
