Plans to turn Reading's IDR into a one way system could yet stall

Reading Borough Council will receive �6.5m from central government next year to develop its transport strategy.

The authority says that is enough to enable it to proceed with plans to convert its Inner Distribution Road (IDR) into an anti-clockwise route.

But the plan may yet be blocked by Wokingham District Council, which has threatened a legal challenge.

Councillor John Howarth, Reading's lead councillor for strategic planning and transport, said: "For the second year running, Reading has received the highest per capita funding of any UK transport authority.

"The announcement will enable us to press ahead with plans to modernise public transport, improve road safety and tackle congestion."

At a meeting in September, Reading Borough Council's cabinet rubber-stamped a decision for a �9m transformation of its IDR saying it was essential to ease congestion.
