Half of shops 'served underaged'
Teenager's hand holding bottle
The youngsters were able to buy alcohol, cigarettes and knives
Half the shops targeted in an undercover operation have been found to be selling alcohol, cigarettes and weapons to underage volunteers.

Two teenage girls visited shops across Reading, Berkshire, of which 50% were found to be breaking the law.

The operation came after Trading Standards visited every retailer with guidance on how to follow legislation.

A county council spokeswoman said: "We shall not hesitate to take action against traders flouting the law."

Lead councillor June Orton added: "We have educated traders of their responsibility not to sell these products to youngsters.

"We expect them to be vigilant and to ask for proof of age or not to serve them if there is any doubt."
