Underage drinking has been linked to anti-social behaviour |
Bars and clubs in west Berkshire will be targeted by police in a bid to combat anti-social behaviour among young people. The random "spot checks" on licensed premises are aimed at ensuring under 18s are not being allowed to purchase alcohol over the festive period.
The British Crime Survey recently reported alcohol was now linked to up to half of all violent crimes.
The study found one in five people say alcohol causes a problem in their area.
Sean Murphy, food and trading standards manager for West Berkshire Council, said: "The unlawful access to alcohol by young people can be a source of concern to the community at large.
"It can lead to health problems as well as anti-social and violent behaviour.
"This is a busy time of year for local pubs and we would encourage licensees to be extra vigilant to ensure that alcohol does not fall into the wrong hands.
"Our advice is that if you are in any doubt you should ask for proof of age.
"The policy should then be 'No Proof of Age - No Sale'."
