The demolition of the grandstand at Ascot Racecourse is due to get under way on Monday as part of a 185m redevelopment of the venue. The new stand planned for the Berkshire racecourse is the focal point of the major two-year makeover, first unveiled in June 2002.
It will boast an internal naturally-lit gallery for spectators and a state-of-the-art parasol roof.
The grandstand has already been stripped bare ahead of its demolition.
The famous horse racing festival itself has been moved to York while the redevelopment - claimed to be the most extensive project of its type in Europe - continues.
Its backers say that Ascot needs the makeover - which won planning permission in July this year - if it is to maintain its position as one of the sport's top courses.
But the capacity of the stadium will remain at 80,000.
